NSJ Tennis Ladder FAQs

  1. Question: What is the difference between a "scheduled match" and a "challenge match"?

Answer: One opponent will be setup for you to play every 2-week period, this is your "scheduled match". This is the minimum requirement to (at least) retain your position on the ladder. Play your scheduled match by the due date at the end of the 2-week period and record the results on the score sheet. If you did not play your scheduled match, enter the reason on the score sheet or send the director the reason by email. "Challenge matches" are additional matches that you choose to play to try to improve your standing on the ladder and earn more points (5 points for a win, 3 points for a loss). Record these results on the score sheet as well. All matches are played at a mutually agreeable time and place.

  2. Question: What happens if neither opponent enters the result of a "scheduled" ladder match on the score sheet.

Answer: Both players move down the ladder by 15% of the number of players. No points will be earned by either player (see also question 3).

  3. Question: What happens when my "scheduled" opponent and I cannot schedule our match due to vacation conflicts?

Answer: As long as the director is notified by email or by a note on the score sheet at the club, there is no winner and neither opponent will move down the ladder as a result of the match not being played. No points will be earned by either player. Likewise, if you know you will be unavailable for an extended period, just notify the director and you can be "scheduled" a bye.

  4. Question: What if we both tried our best to schedule a match, but the weather and personal circumstances kept us from playing our scheduled match?

Answer: As long as the director is notified by email or by a note on the scoresheet at the club, there is no winner and neither opponent will move down the ladder as a result of the match not being played. No points will be earned by either player.

  5. Question: My opponent and I agreed upon a time and place but my opponent did not show up to play; I waited 30 minutes. What should I do?

Answer: If you both agree on a time and place and your opponent does not show up, then you are declared the winner by default, unless you both decide to reschedule. You will earn points for the default win, however the loser does not earn points for the loss. Thirty minutes after the predetermined time should be ample time. Of course, we are all busy folks and there are plenty of things beyond our control that come up. Section 41 of the USTA code somewhat addresses this situation (see in on the web at http://www.tennisserver.com/code.html). Indicate the score on the results sheet as "default, no-show".

  6. Question: Why is a "bye" scheduled?

Answer: You will have no scheduled opponent if you have a "bye". "Byes" will occur either when the number of players in the ladder is odd, or if a player notifies the director that they will be unable to play for that period.

  7. Question: Why am I scheduled to play someone that I already played?

Answer: Occasionally, you may be scheduled to play the same person more than once due to the number of people in the ladder or to keep the matches within the challenge range.

  8. Question: What is the "prime directive"?
  9. Answer: Play hard, play fair, have fun!
